Developmental editing is a structured analysis and restructuring of a manuscript’s narrative arc and logical arguments, and comes before later editorial stages. In contrast to copyediting, which primarily concerns itself with grammar, syntax, and styling, developmental editing targets a deeper base layer, making sure the entire skeleton of the manuscript is logical and sound.

As early in your process as possible, and ideally before the manuscript goes to peer review, copyediting, or publishing. Any overarching argument inconsistencies and structural weaknesses are costly to rework at the later stages and can be avoided. Start early.
