Database Publishing Case Study
Learn more about our solutions for the publishing industry.
Client:
This Client is the producer of one of the world's largest and most
comprehensive databases of chemical information. Their principal databases
include over eighteen million document records and more than thirty three
million substance records. They also produce databases of commercially
available chemicals, chemical reactions, listed regulated chemicals, and
compounds claimed in patents.
Strategic Opportunity:
To help the Client to introduce two new databases - Bibliography and Citations.
Key Challenge:
Both databases required an aggressive turnaround schedule in order to meet
market demand, and they each had very different production requirements. The
Client approached Apex Publishing because our highly automated logistics
management system would allow the client to meet their aggressive schedule.
Apex CoVantage Solution:
For the Bibliography project, Apex provided a database of article abstracts and
bibliographic information with the entire scanned image files of the chemical
journals and conference proceeding converted into ASCII files with proprietary
tagging. For the Citations database, Apex created a standardized database of
Scientific Journals and patents from the TIFF page images of article references
and works cited.
Given the aggressive turnaround time, logistics was the most critical dimension
of this project. Apex utilized a fully automated logistics system at the
production facility, which requires minimal maintenance.
Result:
Apex's highly cost effective automated workflow and quality control systems
enabled the Client to meet their aggressive turnaround schedule and deliver
quality products to its customers. The Client was extremely pleased with
Apex's approach and solution that enabled them to meet their schedule. Apex
currently produces close to 70MB of data every month for this Client.
